Exclusive Backside UV Protection
All lenses prevent transmission of UV rays hitting the front side of the lens. However, up until now, even the best eyeglasses did not protect against the remaining danger of the UV rays coming from the back and side of the lens, which can represent up to 50% of damaging UV light.
Crizal Forte UV combines for the first time an exclusive backside UV protection with Crizal’s superior clarity of vision. Thanks to Essilor’s new Broad Spectrum Technology, the thickness of each nanometric layer constituting anti-reflective coating applied to the backside of the lens has been optimized to virtually eliminate UV light reflection into the eyes, while maintaining perfect transparency of the lens.

What is E-SPF?

Definition of the E-SPF

The Eye-Sun Protection Factor (E-SPF) is a new international index certifying the overall UV protection provided by a lens. It is an objective rating system developed by Essilor International which can rate any lens for daily eyewear as well as for sunglasses.
Inspired by the cosmetic industry standard of UV protection, the E-SPF rating system follows a simple pattern:
The higher the E-SPF, the better the UV protection. Thanks to this reference UV index, it is now possible for everyone to choose easily the best UV protection for their eyes and the sensitive skin around them.
Developed by Essilor Research & Development, the Eye-Sun Protection Factor follows an impartial measurement protocol, which has been endorsed by an independent third party.
The E-SPF provides a simple yet effective way to grade the total UV protection offered by a lens.

How does E-SPF work?

The higher the E-SPF, the better the UV protection

The Eye-Sun Protection Factor is inspired by the protection index displayed prominently on daily moisturizers, sunscreens and sun-protective clothing, and used to rate effectiveness against ultraviolet radiations : the higher the E-SPF value, the greater the level of UV protection.
Wearing a lens with an E-SPF value of 25 means that your eye is 25 better protected that without any lens. (The E-SPF excludes direct eye exposure from around the lenses*)

E-SPF 25 means your eye is 25 times better protected than without any lens.

All lenses are not equal in terms of UV protection
UV protection is not linked to the color of your lenses. In fact, some transparent lenses can protect you even better than some sun lenses**. Whatever its tint, a lens' protection is a result of a combination of a material and a coating, which varies from one lens to another. As a result, not all lenses are equal in terms of UV protection.

Make sure you get the right protection for your eyes
With the Eye-Sun Protection Factor, you can now compare the levels of UV protection provided by all kinds of eyewear, including clear, photochromic, and sun lenses (tinted or polarized). Ask your Eye-Care Professional for advice.
Up to 25 for corrective clear lenses Up to 50+ for sun lenses
Based on measurements made up until now***, the E-SPF values vary from 2 to a maximum of 25 for daily eyeglass lenses and up to 50+ for sun lenses.
25 is the best rate obtained today for a clear lens with perfect transparency. For sun lenses, the E-SPF can reach a maximum of 50+
*Lens performance only: The E-SPF excludes direct eye exposure that depends on external factors
(wearer's morphology, frame shape, position of eyewear...)
**Your daily eyeglasses can't replace your sunglasses in full sunlight: sunwear equipment offers better visual comfort while protecting a wider area around the eye because frames are usually larger.** April 2012
Why create the E-SPF ?

Why create a new UV protection index for eyewear?
The E-SPF index goes one step further than existing labels by integrating for the first time UV protection provided by both sides of a lens.
The commonly used "100% UVA/UVB" label does not provide full information on the overall UV protection of a lens*. Indeed it doesn't take into account UV radiations reflected on the back of a lens, which can represent up to 50% of all UV received into the eye**.

* Existing mention "100% UV protection" refers to the lens' UV cut rate for the transmission of UVA and UVB hitting the front side of the lens. This mention remains valid. Yet it does not integrate backside UV reflection, which can represent up to 50% of global UV exposure. ** Backside UV reflection importance has been recently emphasized (K.Citek 2008)

Where to find E-SPF?

Ask your eye-care professional for the best E-SPF

The E-SPF index is available both for your daily eyewear and yourcorrective sunglasses. With the E-SPF you can now make the right choice to ensure you and your family have maximum protection for your eyes.

Ask your Eye-Care Professional for the best Eye-Sun Protection Factor

CRIZAL E-SPF

E-SPF

The Eye-Sun Protection Factor (E-SPF) is an international index developed by Essilor Research & Development to certify the overall UV protection provided by a lens. It is an objective rating system that can rate any lens for daily eyewear and for sunglasses.
The pattern followed by the E-SPF rating system to rate the lens is inspired by the cosmetic industry standard of UV protection. This means the higher the E-SPF, the better the UV protection. It follows an impartial measurement protocol that has been endorsed by an independent third party.

Why is the E-SPF required?

The commonly used "100% UVA/UVB" label does not provide complete information about the overall UV protection of a lens. In fact, the UV radiations reflected on the back of a lens are not taken into account by the existing labels. It is to be noted that the UV radiations reflected from the back of a lens represent 50% of all UV received into an eye. Contrary to the existing labels, the E-SPF index integrates UV protection provided by both the sides of a lens.

How does the E-SPF work?

The Eye-Sun Protection Factor is used to rate effectiveness against the ultraviolet radiations, which means the E-SPF value is directly proportionate to the level of UV protection. For instance, wearing a lens with an E-SPF value of 25 means your eye is 25 times better protected than an eye without a lens.
As all the lenses are not equal in terms of UV protection, it is important for you to get the right protection for your eyes. You can use the E-SPF to compare the levels of UV protection provided by the different kinds of eyewear including clear, photochromic and sunglasses. Note: Ask for advice from your Eye Care Professional.
The E-SPF values vary from 2 to a maximum of 25 for daily eyewear lenses with the perfect transparency and up to 50+ for sun lenses based on the measurements made till April, 2012.
So, keep your eyes open while selecting eyewear lenses for yourself and look for the lens with the highest E-SPF value.

Transitions Lens

Transitions®

Measures to protect the eyes from sunbum and UV rays are essential for the future health of our eyes.

Clarity indoors, Comfortable darkness outdoors
Protection of the eyes from UV rays and visible light rays (strong sunlight, glare)
Just as ultraviolet rays are known to present the risk not only of sunburn, but also skin cancer, UV rays may also damage the eyes and cause serious conditions such as cataracts and macular dystrophy. The Transitions® lens blocks almost 100% of harmful UV-A and UV-B rays and provides comfortable vision.
Range of protection from sunlight

Protects the eyes from ultraviolet rays and visible light rays (glare) to maintain healthy daily vision

The Transitions® lens can be used in the same way as a general purpose spectacle lens both indoors and outdoors.
  • Light entering the eye is adjusted automatically to enhance visual quality (contrast sensitivity).
  • A single lens fulfills the 2 functions of a clear lens and a colored lens.
  • Indoors, the lens retains the clearness of an ordinary clear lens.
  • The lens cuts out almost 100% of harmful UV rays. In addition, glare is reduced to alleviate tiredness of the eyes and stress.
  • Compatible with single vision and progressive lenses and all kinds of frames.
  • Lens colors: gray / brown
Clarity indoors, Little dark in the shade and on slightly cloudy days, Comfortable darkness oudoors (at a temperature of 23℃)

Colouration/fading speed for daily use with no discomfort

One of the major features of the Transitions® lens is its coloration/fading speed. When the wearer steps outdoors, the lens reacts to UV rays to quickly change to a comfortably dark lens color, quickly changing back to a clear lens when the wearer returns indoors.
The performance is affected by temperature, UV exposure and lens materials.

Frequently asked questions

Could you tell me about the functions of the Transitions® lens?
close
The special photochromic dye used in the Transitions® lens darkens when exposed to UV rays and returns to a clear state as the intensity of the UV rays becomes weaker. This enables change to a natural, comfortable color matched to changes in light. The Transitions® lens constantly functions to block out UV rays whether in a clear or colored state. Changes in the lens colors in accordance with the intensity of UV rays or temperatures serve to protect your eyes from harmful rays present in visible light.
Can the Transitions® lens be used instead of clear lenses?
close
Yes, it can. Because the Transitions® lens is constantly clear indoors, just like a regular clear lens, it can be used in the same way as a clear lens.
How quickly does the Transitions® lens react?
close
The Transitions® lens begins to darken the moment it is exposed to UV rays. The greater the UV-ray intensity, the darker the color of the lens. The lens reverts to a clear state when no longer exposed to UV rays. When you step outside, the lens will quickly darken and will return to a clear state once you return indoors in accordance with the temperature. Due to the properties of the photochromic dye, the higher the temperature, the faster the speed of return to a clear state: Conversely, the lower the temperature, the slower the speed of return to a clear state.
Does the degree of darkness of the Transitions ® lens differ depending on factors such as
the lens type or strength?
close
Basically, the lens darkness remains constant regardless of differences in lens type, design or materials.
Why is it important to protect the eyes from UV rays?
close
Although there are a lot of people who take various measures to protect their skin from UV rays, few people realize the need to protect the eyes from damage caused by UV rays. The results of investigations have demonstrated that continued long-term exposure of the eyes to UV-A and UV-B rays without some kind of protection can cause conditions such as cataracts or other eye diseases, while blue light present in visible light rays can lead to conditions such as age-related macular degeneration. Nowadays, many eye specialists recommend continuous protection of the eyes from UV rays. Like UV-cut clear lenses, the Transitions ® lens blocks out almost 100% of UV rays that can damage the eyes.
Can the Transitions® lens be used for sunglasses?
close
The degree of darkness of the Transitions® lens depends on factors such as the intensity of UV rays and temperature. The Transitions® lens darkens to a degree more or less the same as sunglasses in intense sunlight (UV rays) when the temperature is low. However, during the summer months, for example, when UV rays are intense and the temperature is high, the lens tends to darken only to a slight degree. To protect the eyes from glare during the summer, it is recommended to use together with a separate pair of sunglasses. For further information, please check with your local opticians or eye specialist.
Is the Transitions® lens suitable for driving?
close
The lens color takes time to return to its clear state in tunnels or dark parking lots, or at sunset, for example, and this can be extremely dangerous since it may result in temporarily degraded vision. Use of the lens should be avoided in such places or at such times. It should be noted that the front windscreen of many automobiles is furnished with UV-cut functions that results in almost no coloration of the Transitions ® lens. Please check with your local opticians or eye ophthalmologist for information on whether you need light-regulating lenses when driving.
Is the Transitions® lens suitable for working on computers?
close
Yes, it is. In situations where ordinary clear-lens spectacles can be used, the Transitions® lens can also be used in the same way. Transitions® lenses provide an even more comfortable field of vision both indoors and outdoors, during the day ort at night.
How does the Transitions® lens reduce glare?
close
When exposed to UV rays present in sunlight, the Transitions® lens darkens and returns to a clear state when the UV-ray intensity decreases. This enables control of light permeation, thereby reducing glare.
Does the Transitions® lens also improve vision?
close
Yes, it does. The Transitions® lens enhances the ability to discern brightness and contrast, making is possible to see in any light.
What about the UV-ray cut performance?
close
Like UV-cut clear lenses, the Transitions® lens block out almost 100% of UV rays that can damage the eyes.
Are there any special cautions that should be observed when using the Transitions® lens?
close
Because they can be handled in the same way as ordinary lenses, there are no special cautions to be observed, they do however differ from sunglasses and special lenses, for example a Polarizing lens, and this means that it may not be possible to achieve the blocking performance required for applications for such lenses. In addition, because the lens will not instantaneously revert to its clear state when the wearer moves into the shade in cold weather, the wearer may experience temporarily degraded vision due to a lack of light and, as a result, it is not advisable to use the lens in situations where degraded vision may present risks.
Does the coloration of the Transitions® lens become darker at high temperatures?
close
Although the lens colors when exposed to UV rays, the speed at which the lens returns to its clear state increases at high temperatures, even at high UV-ray intensity, and this tends rather to imbue the lens with a lighter color. Although dependent on usage and environmental conditions, the lens color is considerably lighter at high temperatures (30 degrees or higher) that its original coloration density (Value measured by SEIKO).
